The Sudanese army has taken control of the national TV and radio headquarters as speculation grows about an imminent resignation by President Omar al-Bashir.
Current first-vice president Awad Awnaf who was appointed in February after Bashir dissolved the government is expected to lead a national transition council.
A military coup on the back of a popular uprising seems to be in motion as the Khartoum airport is closed and all the major roads are manned by the military.
PovoNews.com previously reported that the Sudanese army is scheduled to make an important announcement today as anti-Bashir protesters camp outside the military HQ for the sixth consecutive day.
Since December 19, Sudan has been rocked by persistent protests sparked by the government’s move to double the price of bread and fuel amidst an economic crisis.
Protestors started camping at the military headquarters in Sudan’s capital Khartoum on April 6 in an attempt to deliver a petition seeking the army’s assistance in removing President Bashir.
