The Gabonese military has named General Oligui Nguéma Brice interim President after they deposed President Ali Bongo in a coup on August 30.
The announcement was made by the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), a group of Gabonese military leaders responsible for leading the coup.
Brice Oligui Nguema, a cousin of the ousted President Ali Bongo, was the head of Gabon’s Republican Guard, the unit responsible for protecting the head of state.
