Cilliers Brink, the Mayor of Tshwane—South Africa’s administrative capital—was ousted in a motion of no confidence on 26 September 2024.
The motion was submitted by African National Congress (ANC) councilor Frans Boshielo on September 3, following the withdrawal of two previous ANC motions against Brink.
Brink’s removal marks the end of the multiparty coalition that has governed Tshwane since March 2023, which included the Democratic Alliance (DA), ActionSA, FF Plus, IFP, and the ADCP.
The main catalyst for Brink’s downfall was the Herman Mashaba-led ActionSA, which announced weeks prior that it would be pulling out of the coalition.
In the decisive vote, Brink was removed by 120 councilors from the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), ActionSA, and the Patriotic Alliance (PA).
The motion faced opposition from 87 councilors representing the DA, IFP, FF Plus, and ACDP, with one councilor abstaining from the vote.
It will be interesting to see which party secures the mayorship and what implications this will have for South Africa’s 2026 municipal elections.
