20 South African teenagers build own plane, flying it from Cape to Cairo

Twenty South African teenagers built a Sling-4 Plane for a 5 week long trip across Africa from Cape to Cairo and back.

Under the guidance and supervision of The Airplane Factory and Denel Aviation, twenty inexperienced teenagers built a Sling-4 aircraft within three weeks in 2018.

Now they will take turns to co-pilot the same plane they assembled across 10 African countries from Cape to Cairo starting 13 June 2019 over six weeks.

The U-Dream Cape to Cairo Challenge will take the 20 South African teenage pilots through Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea before reaching Egypt their final destination.

After leaving Cape Town on June 15 they arrived in Luderitz a small coastal town in Namibia before a brief pit-stop in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) on June 19 en-route to the heart of Africa (Malawi, June 21).

The project is the brainchild of 17-year-old Megan Werner from Krugersdorp who is the founder of U-Dream Global Foundation that seeks to empower youth to achieve the impossible.

While logistics and support are being provided by CFS, ExecuJet, Worldfuel and The Airplane Factory, the team needs R350 000 for fuel, accommodation, crew support, documentation and other costs.
