Comoros Azali Assoumani secures 4th term after winning presidential election with 60.77%

Comorian politician Azali Assoumani secured a controversial fourth term in office after winning the March 24 presidential election with 96 635 votes (60.77%).

The Comoros National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced Assoumani as the winner on Tuesday followed by Ahamada Mahamoudou who was a distant second with 23 233 votes (14.62%).

A total of 166 447 votes were cast, of which 7 439 were invalid (spoilt ballots) from a total of 309 137 registered voters in Comoros giving a voter turnout of 53.84%.

Assoumani a former soldier led the country from 1999 to 2000 after a coup, he then served elected terms from 1999 to 2000, then from 2002 to 2006, and again from 2016 to 2019.

Until 2018 the presidency rotated every five years between the country’s three islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli, a 2018 constitutional referendum ended this system and allowed Assoumani to stand for a fourth term.

A total of 19 candidates filed to contest in the March 24 election but the Supreme Court approved 13 after rejecting the candidacy of Mohamed Ali Soilihi and Ibrahim Mohamed Soule among others.
