Matt Gaetz and Donald Trump

Matt Gaetz defeated his Republican opponent Aaron Dimmock on August 20 in Florida’s 1st congressional district primary election in the United States.

Latest results showed that Matt Gaetz had an unassailable lead of 70,777 votes (72%) against 26,774 votes (27.4%) by Aaron Dimmock

Gaetz a long-time and vocal ally of former President Donald Trump remains under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for trafficking, corruption, and campaign finance violations.

Dimmock, a retired Navy officer backed by Super PACs connected to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, faced Gaetz, who filed the resolution in October 2023 that ousted McCarthy.

Gaetz will now face Gay Valimont, a Democratic candidate and former leader of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, in November.

In the closing days before the primary, Gaetz campaigned with a long line of conservative Republicans across his district including Rand Paul, Chip Roy, and Lauren Boebert.

Gaetz is the son of a former Florida state Senate president Donald Jay Gaetz who is currently running for the 1st Senate district in the 2024 election.
