Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi officially set 30 October 2024 as the date for the country’s 2024 general election.
This follows the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) nominating Masisi as the party’s presidential candidate at its national congress held over the weekend.
According to Masisi, Parliament will be dissolved on September 5, with the presidential nomination court scheduled to sit on September 28 at the Gaborone High Court. The nomination court for MPs and councilors will convene on October 4.
Masisi is seeking a second and final term as Botswana’s president, having first come to power in 2014 after the BDP defeated Duma Boko’s Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).
In Botswana, people vote for MPs from 57 single-member constituencies during the general election, and these members of parliament then elect the president in the National Assembly.
