DRC’s ruling party PPRD has named Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary as President Joseph Kabila’s successor and candidate for the December 23 elections.
The 58-year-old former governor of the eastern province of Maniema served as interior minister from late 2016 until this February, when he was named permanent secretary of Kabila’s PPRD party.
In May 2017 the EU imposed sanctions on Shadary and froze his assets for the repeated attacks on DRC civilians that led to the death of hundreds during his time as interior minister.
Kabila, whose second term officially ended in 2016, is constitutionally ineligible for December’s poll, although his rivals accuse him of wanting to stay in power.
