DRC’s former PM Sama Lukonde elected Senate president

DRC’s former Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge was elected as the President of the Senate on August 12.

Agissons et Bâtissons (AB) candidate Sama Lukonde secured 85 votes against his rival UDPS member Jonas Mukamba who received 10 votes.

Sama Lukonde succeded ADFC leader Modeste Bahati Lukwebo who resigned from DRC’s upper-house in February to sit in the National Assembly.

According to articles 75 and 76  of DRC’s constitution, the Senate President is first-in-line of succession if the elected president dies, resigns, is temporarily incapacitated, or is removed from office.
