Former Johannesburg Speaker Colleen Makhubele left the SA Rainbow Alliance (Sara), which she founded in 2023, to join the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP).
Makhubele was a member of the Congress of the People (Cope) led by Mosiuoa Lekota before the party fired her in November last year for starting Sara.
In a letter dated August 29, Makhubele described the Jacob Zuma-led MK as “the party that will steer South Africa into the future”
Makhubele joins a growing list of high-profile politicians who are joining the MK Party such as former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, and former government spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi.
During South Africa’s 2024 general elections, Makhubele’s party, SARA, received 4,796 votes (0.03%), while the MK Party garnered 2.3 million votes, making it the third-largest political party in the country.
