Jailed Mozambican journalists get bail after 3 months in prison: Amade Abubacar & Germano Daniel Adriano

Jailed Mozambican journalists Amade Abubacar & Germano Daniel Adriano were granted bail on Tuesday, April 23 after spending three months in prison.

Police detained Abubacar for interviewing people fleeing armed attacks in the Cabo Delgado province on 5 January 2019, he was later handed over to the military and held incommunicado for 12 days.

Adriano, a journalist at the community radio and television of Nacedje, was arrested on January 18 and later detained without charge at Mieze prison.

In January, the authorities accused the two journalists of “public incitement using electronic media” and “violation of State secrecy.”

Prosecutors alleged that Abubacar’s notebook contained detailed information about an armed insurgency. They never explained Adriano’s arrest.

On April 16, after the 90-day legal limit since Abubacar’s arrest, the two journalists were charged with “spreading messages damaging to the Mozambican Armed Forces.”

Sporadic attacks in the province by groups of unidentified armed men have killed more than 100 people, causing fear and displacement in several regions since October 2017.
