Lebanon’s ex-central bank governor Riad Salameh arrested

Lebanon’s former central bank governor, Riad Salameh, was arrested in Beirut on September 3 on charges of allegedly amassing over $110 million through corruption.

Riad Salameh, 73 was governor of Lebanon’s central bank for 30 years from 1993 to 2023 making him the longest-serving central bank governor in the world.

Salameh is charged with embezzlement, money laundering, and fraud related to commissions earned through the central bank’s dealings with Optimum between 2015 and 2018.

Optimum Invest said on Wednesday it was assisting Lebanese judicial authorities in their investigation of former central bank governor Riad Salameh.
