South African-born Chidima Adethina was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 at a glittering ceremony held at Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos on August 31.
Chidima withdrew from this year’s Miss South Africa after xenophobic attacks on social media led to a government probe that revealed that her mother had illegally acquired South African citizenship.
Although Chidima Adethina was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican descent, the fraud investigation into her mother’s citizenship could jeopardize Chidima’s citizenship status.
The 23-year-old law student, who represented Taraba State at Miss Universe Nigeria, will now represent her father’s country of birth at the Miss Universe grand finale in Mexico this November.
Miss Universe South Africa congratulated Chidima in a message on X saying “Miss Universe Nigeria 🇳🇬 2024 is Chidimma Adentshina. Congratulations to our South African beauty 🥹👑”
