The Sudanese army is scheduled to make an important announcement today as thousands of anti-Bashir protesters continue to camp outside the military headquarters in Khartoum for the sixth consecutive day.
Anti-government protests that started on December 19 triggered by the doubling bread and fuel prices have grown into an uprising against Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir who has ruled Sudan for the last 30 years since a military coup in 1989.
PovoNews.com previously reported that Bashir unsuccessfully tried to consolidate power by dissolving government and declaring a 1-year state of emergency on Friday, February 22.
Protesters upped the pressure on April 6 by protesting daily outside the military headquarters which is also Bashir’s official residence demanding his resignation.
Some elements within the military appear to be siding with demonstrators against armed militia loyal to Bashir and the feared intelligence services.
Attempts by security forces to break up the demonstration have killed at least 22 – including five soldiers, who organisers said were defending the protesters – and injured more than 150.
“The Sudanese army will issue an important statement soon. Wait for it,” a state television anchor said on Thursday morning, April 11
