Thailand’s parliament elected 37-year-old Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the country’s youngest Prime Minister and the second woman in the post on August 16.
Povonews.com previously reported that Thailand’s Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office on August 14 for violating the constitution.
Paetongtarn is the daughter of billionaire former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was deposed in a military coup on 19 September 2006.
Her father’s sister Yingluck Shinawatra was Thailand’s first female prime minister from 2011 to 2014, she was also deposed in a military coup in 2014. Paetongtarn’s uncle Somchai Wongsawat was briefly prime minister in 2008 but was removed in a court ruling.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra has no prior experience in government, having only worked within her father’s Rende Hotel Group. In 2021, she joined Pheu Thai, the party her father founded in 2007, and later became its leader in 2023.
