Thuso Mbedu became the first South African actress to lead an American TV series when she was cast as Cora, the main character in “The Underground Railroad.”
The 11 episode series tells the story of three slaves who seek freedom from Southern plantations via the Underground Railroad and will premiere on Amazon.
Mbedu’s love interest in the series Caesar will be played by Aaron Pierre, while Chase W. Dillon will portray Homer in Barry Jenkins’s directed “The Underground Railroad.”
The South African actress has been nominated twice for an Emmy Award for her role as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in Is’Thunzi, she also appeared in local soap opera’s Scandal!, Isibaya, and the Saints and Sinners.
Taking to social media to share her big news, Thuso Mbedu said
“My thumb and neurons are failing me right now so I’ll just do as most South Africans do when this happens: I got the job! It was such an amazing process and experience. Like, true story, just prepping to audition for this role made me grow so much. It’s such a blessing and honour to tell this story… Again, words fail me so I’ll stop there for now,”
