Trump & Kim Jong-un meet in Hanoi, Vietnam for second nuclear summit

US President Donald Trump met with his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong-un on 27 February 2019 in Hanoi, Vietnam for a two-day nuclear summit to discuss efforts to denuclearise the Korean peninsula.

The two leaders met at the luxurious 5-star Metropole hotel for a 20-minute one-on-one meeting ahead of a dinner with aides later today.

A series of meetings are scheduled to start on Thursday where US negotiators hope to get detailed commitments from Pyongyang on dismantling the country’s nuclear weapons while Kim’s team will be pushing for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Trump is under pressure to force some major concessions from North Korea after limited progress from the first Singapore summit held on 12 June 2018.

Ultimately, the US also wants an inventory of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal and an agreed-upon process for destroying them in a way that can be verified.
