Uganda’s Supreme Court upheld a decision to remove the presidential age limit paving the way for the country’s 74-year-old leader Yoweri Museveni to seek a sixth term in the 2021 election.
Museveni was initially barred from contesting for a fifth term in the 2016 election but contested and won after the ruling party-dominated parliament removed the two-term limit in 2005.
A 75-year presidential age limit stood in the way of Museveni’s sixth term in the 2021 presidential election when he would be 76 years old.
Parliament approved the removal of the 75-year age limit last year, following a court challenge judges dismissed an appeal by the opposition in a 4-3 verdict in Kampala on 18 April 2019.
