Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Dmytro Kuleba resigns

Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Dmytro Kuleba tendered his resignation in a handwritten note to parliament on September 4.

Kuleba joins 3 ministers and 2 deputy ministers who also submitted their resignation letters to the chairperson of Ukraine’s parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk.

The string of resignations by Ukrainian cabinet officials comes after weeks of speculation that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was planning a major cabinet reshuffle.

  • Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna
  • Deputy Prime Minister and Reintegration Minister Iryna Vereshchuk 

Netherlands Minister of Foreign Affairs, Caspar Veldkamp posted on X saying “Dear @DmytroKuleba , thank you for everything the past few years. In the most difficult time in Ukrainian history, you worked tirelessly to advocate for your country. You are a great friend to the Netherlands too. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.”

Romania’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Luminita Odobescu also shared a message on X saying “Honored to work closely with you dear @DmytroKuleba during these hard times. Your commitment to🇺🇦 is unwavering. Your work is apreciated. 🇷🇴 continues to stand firm in supporting #Ukraine. All the best in your future endeavors-we shall meet again in a free, peaceful&victorious 🇺🇦”

Moldovia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi posted on X about Kuleba’s resignation saying “Dear, @DmytroKuleba , as Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, you have been a dedicated & selfless promoter of diplomacy in times of war, showing resilience and leadership. I deeply value our friendship and wish you success in your future endeavors.”

Dmytro Ivanovych Kuleba a short biography

  • He was born on 19 April 1981 in Sumy, Ukraine
  • Kuleba graduated with an honors degree in international law from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 2003
  • He is married to Yevhenia Kuleba and they have two children
  • Kuleba served in Ukraine’s diplomatic service from 2003 to 2013
  • He resigned from public service in 2013 citing his disagreement with Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych
  • Kuleba returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Ambassador-at-Large in 2014
  • He was appointed Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe in 2016
  • Kuleba was Deputy Prime Minister on matters of European relations from August 2019 to March 2020
  • He was appointed Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs on 4 March 2020
