Zim journalist arrested during protest against police brutality

Zimbabwean journalists were arrested after handing in a petition against police brutality at the Harare Central Police Station on 8 April 2019.

The petition was to protest against an attack on journalists from 263chat that happened on Thursday, March 4 after police officers fired teargas into their offices and barricaded the door.

Police were trying to prevent journalists from recording a joint operation with the Harare City Council against vendors in the CBD.

Journalists from the private media marched in Harare under the campaign #JournalismIsnotacrime a petition was also delivered to Harare Mayor, Herbet Gomba.

At Harare Central, journalists intending to hand in petition against police attack on 263Chat were initially barred from getting in by riot police who then confiscated placards. They were later allowed in and are waiting to handover petition.

263Chat journalist Lovejoy L-Jay Mtongwiza recounted how police officers tore their petition and threw it into the bin saying

So when we took our petition to @PoliceZimbabwe Harare Central Police Station, one of the police officers tore our petitions and threw them in the bin. We are simply trying to reason with the police but they are being hostile.
