Waker-Uz-Zaman is a four-star general and current head of the Bangladesh Army born in Sherpur District on 16 September 1966.
Zaman came to national prominence when he announced the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5 and the formation of an interim government.
A 30-year military veteran Zaman was appointed Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Bangladesh Army on 29 December 2023 before getting another promotion as head of the army on 23 June 2024.
The 58-year-old father of 2 daughters is married to Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman, the daughter of General Muhammad Mustafizur Rahman, who was army chief from 1997 to 2000.
He has a Masters degree in Defence Studies from the National University of Bangladesh and a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King’s College, London.
